History
J.G.S.
Clark, the original designer of Polly’s I-IV, has built many locomotives
for customers in both 5” and 7¼” gauge. It was while
building these that the idea of producing a simple locomotive which people
with little or no experience could put together was formed. John Clark
used his wealth of experience building locomotives, spent time looking at various
designs and assessed what features would be best to combine into a kit built
locomotive for ease of manufacture and assembly. The result of this work
was the Polly. The first example was built in the mid 1980’s and
tested on the Mold MES track. Since then his workshops in Denbigh, Wales
produced numerous examples of the Polly range and these can be found throughout
the UK and many other parts of the world.
In 1999 Andy Clarke bought the Polly range of locomotives. Under Andy’s leadership Polly Model Engineering have added more models and many components are now produced on CNC machinery. The theme of good quality models, available to all levels of experience, has continued and help is readily offered if needed.
The Polly range of kit locomotives has seen 3 new additions. These are the Polly V, VI and the Orenstein & Koppel ‘Caroline’. They are a result of work between Andy and Polly Model Engineering’s European Agent, Geerlig Voogd.
Polly Model Engineering has also added the Practical Scale range of locomotives to its catalogue. These are fine scale models of standard gauge locomotives designed by Neville Evans, David Aitken and others and brought together in the Practical Scale range by Pete Thomas of Polly Model Engineering. They are not kit locomotives but drawings, castings and some machined, laser cut and lost wax cast parts are available. We look forward to see running the models currently being built and welcome their owners to join the Polly Owners Group.
Polly Owners Group (POG)
The Polly Owners Group has been formed by people who enjoy building and running their locos. Over the past few years a number of Rallies have been held for Polly owners to attend, run their locos, meet others and exchange ideas. Following the success of these rallies the idea of an owners group was put forward. So here we are!
The aims of POG are as follows:
- The bringing together of individuals owning any of the Polly range of locomotives.
- Provide help and encouragement to the members of the Group, whether they are building or running a Polly locomotive.
- Organise meetings during the year to enable the coming together of members of the group and their locomotives subject to the demand within the Group.
Please have a browse of our site and if you have any further questions or would like to become a member please contact us. We look forward to welcoming you to the Polly Owners Group.
The POG constitution can be found here (Word document).
